Dental Care Without Insurance: How My PrevCare Plan Works

Either way, the result tends to be the same. The cleaning gets pushed to next month. The sensitive tooth gets ignored. A year goes by, then two.

Waiting is the expensive option

Here is the part that surprises people. Skipping the dentist to save money usually costs more, not less.

Routine cleanings and exams are the least expensive appointments you will ever have. They are also the appointments that catch small problems while they are still small. A spot of early decay found at a cleaning is a simple filling. That same spot found two years later can mean a crown or a root canal, which takes more chair time, more recovery and considerably more money.

Preventive care is not the appointment you skip when you are trying to be careful with your budget. It is the appointment that protects it.

What a dental savings plan actually is

My PrevCare Plan is a membership plan, not insurance. You pay a low monthly amount directly to us, and in return you get your routine dental care covered along with savings on other treatment. There is no insurance company sitting in the middle of the relationship.

That difference matters more than it sounds:

• No deductibles. Your benefits start working right away rather than after you have spent a certain amount out of pocket.
• No annual maximum on preventive and cosmetic care. Traditional plans typically cap what they will pay each year, and that cap is often reached faster than patients expect. This plan does not put a ceiling on your preventive and cosmetic care.
• No claims to file. Nothing to submit, nothing to appeal, no explanation of benefits arriving three weeks later that you cannot decipher.
• Orthodontic services included. Braces and alignment treatment are part of what the plan covers.

Who this makes the most sense for

The plan tends to be a good fit if you are:

• Self employed, contracting, or working somewhere that does not offer dental benefits
• Retired and no longer covered by an employer plan
• Working part time or between jobs
• Covered by a plan with an annual maximum you routinely hit before the year is out
• Paying for a family, where four sets of cleanings add up quickly
