Dentures, or plates, replace teeth, maintain jaw structure, and restore chewing function. There are several types of dentures- full/complete, partial, and implant dentures (see implants section). Full/complete dentures are recommended to replace the entire upper or entire lower arch when all teeth are missing. Partial dentures are used when only a few teeth need replacing. Implant dentures are a modern, permanent option for replacing missing teeth. There are also several options when discussing what material is right for you.
Regardless of the type of denture you and your dentist decide is right for you, denture appointments at our office will take several appointments and possibly follow-up adjustment appointments for adjustments. We can perform some denture adjustments in-office using our own lab, but we do not make dentures-in-a-day. We use quality labs, excellence materials, and believe taking the necessary time to craft a beautiful, comfortable denture is worth the time it takes to complete the process.
The typical process of making a traditional denture is as follows:
- We will discuss tooth replacement options and help you decide which option is best for you.
- We will then take any necessary X-rays and make impressions to send to the lab.
- The lab will create models or wax models in the exact shape and position of the denture that will be made.
- You will be given the opportunity to try in the model several times as need to make sure you are comfortable with all aspects of the denture before the final is made.
- The final denture will be seated when it arrives at our office or when you are scheduled to have extractions if you are receiving an immediate denture.
- You will be invited to return to our office as needed for adjustments.
Adjusting to wearing new dentures and eating with new dentures may take some time and any removable oral appliance will require maintenance at home. Our practice understands the importance of educating patients on what to expect post dental treatment and home care. Your dentist will tell you how long to wear your dentures each day and when to remove it. You will also receive education on how to clean your appliance and how to properly place it in your mouth each day as well as answer any other questions you have.
